History of Hope Island Australia

Hope Island was named after Captain Louis Hope, who was given 1800 acres of land around the mouth of the Coomera River in recognition of his contribution to the development of the sugar cane industry in Queensland. The land at Hope Island was used for sugar cane plantations, growing arrowroot and dairy farming although Captain Hope never lived here.

The sleepy area in northern Gold Coast was discovered in the mid 1980's by entrepreneur developer Mike Gore. He quickly saw the potential of the areas as an exclusive, luxury residential resort.

The development of the area started with Sanctuary Cove and later expanded to Hope Island Resort. Both of which are designated Integrated Tourism Resorts which enable overseas foreign investors to purchase land and property in these two areas without requiring them to seek approval from the Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB).

With a population in 2001 of just 3836 (ABS statistics), by the 2006 census the population of Hope Island (not including Helensvale) was 5,396.

The majority of the residents of the area are families and couples. Most familes are Australian, however, overseas countries represented amongst residents include UK, South Africa, New Zealand and Japan as being the most common countries of origin.

As the area grows in numbers, so has the infrastructure to support these families. More shops and other amenities have been developed in the local area.
